Sexual drive is the urge for sexual activities. Sexual drive is highly influenced by the individual’s personality and the sex hormones. According to experts, sex hormones in male (testosterone) and females’ sex hormone (estrogen) play very important roles in the sexual life of an individual. There’s an increase in the production quantity of sex hormone, during puberty stage. This consequently enhances the development of sexual characteristics, like the public hair, deep voice, pimples, enlargement of breast, penis, curved hip, but to mention a few. The quantity and effectiveness of these sex hormones in males and females control and determine the level of sexuality in individuals.
Libido is the desire for sex and much more. Besides, it can inspire selfish devotion as well as the desire for sexual ratification. According to frued, ‘there are three (3) stages of human personality, the Id ego, the super ego and the super ego. The Id ego is a biological part of personality that represents a repository of subconscious actions and development. It can also be used to represent a part of the subconscious mind where many of the person’s basic needs, feelings and desires are enlisted. Sex as one of the basic needs of man is supposed to develop in the Id stage. For instance, some people have high appetite for food while some have less. Id also controls libido, instinct, desire and lots more.
Another stage of personality development is the ego. It is responsible for a person’s sense of value and principles. The ego controls and manages the manifestation of the Id to the outside world, by inhibiting any demand or desire by the Id. This can be seen as the psychological part of the mind that makes man to be a reasonable and conscious creature.
Those who fail to respond to this call by nature (Id) are said to be maniacs; e.g. nymphomaniac, kleptomaniac, etc. These group of people are not to be blamed rather they should be pitied; their ego fails to put restraints to excessive instinctual gratification (Id).
The third and the last stage of the mind is the super ego. This is the part of personality that makes a person to be aware of right and wrong, as well as make the person feel, if he or she does wrong. It also represents the social part of the mind which deals with the outside world and repository of the conscience and consciousness. A person that lacks this part of the mind lacks conscience and he becomes a sociopath, etc.
Finally, sexually drives are controlled primarily by the Id, which represents the biological nature of man. So, the intensity of a person’s sexual drive is not only influenced by upbringings, but also varies at different times during life. Sex life decreases as one gets older. Factors like, fatigue, excess alcohol, anxiety, chronic pains, defective sex with one’s sex partner and demand for child bearing can also reduce person’s sex urge or libido.
